Polling stations opened across Sarawak at 8am for the state’s 10th election
Voters trickled into stations here which will remain open until 5pm. A total of 979,796 voters are eligible to cast ballots at the 1,749 centres across the state after a 10-day campaign period.
More than 200 candidates are vying for 71 seats in the state assembly. For the first time ever, all constituencies are being contested. In this election, 27 seats will see straight fights, 23 will have three-cornered contests, 17 four-cornered fights, 2 five-cornered contests and another 2 where six are contesting.
Political analysts say a clear victory in the Sarawak contest for Najib could lead to snap national polls being called this year even though they do not need to be held until mid-2013. Najib is attempting to woo Sarawak's voters following unprecedented gains made by the opposition at the national level in 2008 in which it won a third of parliamentary seats. Those results forced Najib's predecessor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to step down

ReplyDeleteVery close fight in (N65) Senadin between Dr Michael Teo (PKR) and Dr Lee Kim Shin (BN). There was much protest and flared tempers when BN won by 58 votes. A recount was refused. Anybody know more about what really happened?

DAP did very well. Shows what good strategy, focus and choosing one's battles well can do

ReplyDeleteBut Dtk Lee is well-liked and popular (unliked most of his fellow SUPP contestants). He was expected to more than just barely scrap through.
Lets hope he gets a full ministerial post in place of Unc. Georgie.

ReplyDeleteDAP actually contested in 15 and lost 3 including, Sri Aman, Bawang Assan and Engkilili.
Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) President Tan Sri Dr George Chan was Barisan Nasional's (BN) biggest casualty in the State election Saturday night when he failed to defend the Piasau seat in Miri.
ReplyDeleteThe 75-year-old politician was defeated by 28-year-old lawyer Ling Sie Kiong of DAP by a majority of 1,590 votes. Ling received 5,998 votes while Dr Chan garnered 4,408.
Dr Chan had been the State Assemblyman for Piasau, formerly known as Miri, for the last 6 terms, since 1983.
In other words, Dr Chan first became Assemblyman for Piasau (Miri) when the young DAP politician Ling Sie Kiong was just born !!!
Did BN get its 2/3 majority? oh NO !!
ReplyDeleteIn terms of seats won, yes BN got more than 2/3 (55 seats out of 71).
ReplyDeleteIn terms of popular vote ... BN managed to get 372,379 votes (54.5%) in total while the opposition raked in 300,288 votes (45.5%)
this was an 8% drop from the previous election.

@Anon 12:39am - Wasn't Engkilili contested by PKR? I think it was.
ReplyDeleteElection Jaga, you are correct that Engkilili was contested by PKR. The 15th seat that DAP contested was actually Bukit Kota i.e. Limbang which was the 3rd seat that they lost. It was also the seat where they faredworst with the result as :

Usop Jidin(IND - IND) 398 votes
Abdul Rahman Ismail(BN - PBB) 6835 votes
2 seats (Ngemah and Telang Usan) could have been won by opposition had there been straight fights. But multi-cornered fights meant the opposition votes were split enabling the BN to win.
