Memories of the Tikam game

Do you remember these games that used to be available in so many shops that we used to frequent as kids? For five or ten cents, we picked from a set of sealed slips of paper, peeled them open to reveal  a number, and then we would check against the main "board" to see if our number had won any prize.

The board came in many shapes and forms, like this next one where the actual prizes were hanging off the board.

And here's yet another version ...

I checked on the Web and it seems these games were called Tikam Tikam, but I really can't remember if that was what we referred to them in Sarawak. What I do recall is that the act of  picking one or more of those slips was called "pok" (literally "hope" in Hokkien).

What else do you remember about this game and phase of our childhood ? Do share your memories.

  2. Wow, was pleasantly surprised to see this "pok"! i remembered my siblings and childhood frens had to pay 5 cts for each "pok" or a 10 cts "pok" for a better prize. i dont recall the second picture but the 3rd picture kind of gave me the memory that if u tear off one look-a-like stamp from the board, one might find a picture prize of a 10cts, 20 cts, 50 cts or even $1.00 picture to show that u had won that amount for the "poK". Fun :)) It gave me a chuckle to see this. Thks for the memories(Like)!

  3. My paternal grandfather used to have these in his small shop near the 7th storey flats. He buys them from the wholesaler but he can also buy the pre-printed slips which we used to re-furbish the 'game board' when it was used up. We recycle in those days! Remember days when we had to re-glue the whole set together at home.

  5. Hey Richard, so you prepared the sets at home. Tell the truth now ... did you make special note of where the winning slips were on the board so you could get at the best prizes? Hehehe

  6. I remembered such games of hope, available at one of the Palm Road hawker stalls in front of the Miramar cinema.
I won some good prizes like comics, pop guns, fireworks but never come across these games nowadays.
