Class of 78 Get-Together in Kota Kinabalu

Fifteen chaps from the Class of 78 were in Kota Kinabalu between 12th to 15th August 2011. KK being a lovely coastal city, I had assumed they were there mainly for the sun, sand and sea. Leo reports that they were also there for the comradeship, cuisine and chi .....ahem ....  chinese reflexology.

Those who made the trip were .... From 5Sc1, there was Soh Soon Chai, Dominique Ng Kim Ho, Pierce Chow Kar Ho, Ng Yaw Hwa, Kho Ping, Chi Ted Fatt, Si Poh Liang, Henry Kung and Alan Poh.  From 5Sc2, there was Vincent Leong, Voon Kian Peng, Richard Wong Seng Kong, Ngu Chin Ho and Leonard Sia. From 5Arts1 was David Teo.

Dinner for the first two nights was at the same place, and in true Josephian record-beating style, some 10 kgs of crabs was consumed.

Those who arrived on 12th morning visited the islands kind courtesy of David Teo (5Arts1) who is running a business in KK. He made most of the arrangements there including deciding where to eat and where to get the rubs and more. Definitely made the trip more enjoyable.

On Sunday night, onlyeight stayed on. More eating, more catchups, more chatting, more reflexo ...

Next year, the Class of 78 is considering another reunion ... probably in Phuket or Bandung.  Anyone interested, please contact one of them.

Anthony Tiong (Class of 76) Writes ...

Here's a note from a former 76 brother, now living Down Under ...

Dear brothers of class 76,

I know I won't even know more than half of you but that is not the point. It is about the class of '76 ex-Josephians getting together for the mother of all reunions. What can I say to people like James Yong, Benjamin Wong, Robert Chin, Mark Chin and many others to name a few for organising the reunion.  I guess only somebody trained from St Joseph could come up with such a feat.
First, I have to thank Sky Sim Kuan Yang, none other than another class of '76 who is also another resident of Canberra for ringing me up excitely yesterday (7 June 2011 4:50pm) about finding James's blog. What a timing and coincidence - 7/6/ '76. Is there anything significant there?  I have yet to go through the whole blog and already I am finding heaps of treasures one of which is all your email addresses.  I also realise that some of us have decided to leave us early and to them, I shall say, we will meet again in the second life.
Yes, we were not there but it is never never too late to turn up for the roll call, so "Greetings from Canberra, Australia - Class '76)!"
Please feel free to drop me a line and if I could response in enough short tome, please accept my apology.

Best regards,

Anthony Tiong

Caption Time

We haven't done one of these for some time. The name of this game is "Caption Time", meaning that you are all invited to suggest creative captions for this photo. Then after a couple of weeks, we will take a look at the suggestions and collectively vote for the best one. Of course the "star" of the photo will have a few extra votes.

Attractive no-prizes will be given. Unless someone can sponsor some real prizes :-)

Anyway here's the photo ... a real classic in my opinion.  Obviously taken during the hairy days of the Seventies ...

Over to you guys and gals  ...

History of St Joseph's School book

I'm posting this just so that former Josephians who don't know of the existence of this little publication will be informed. This book was written by Brother Hilary McGroary. I think it is still available for purchase from the school office (anyone who knows, care to comment?)

A lot of interesting information and photos are included in this book. Of course, there will definitely need to be a revised and updated edition because this volume has one notable omission - I'm not in it ! LOL.

But it's quite ok. I forgive them since my old man is featured in there.

St Joe Teachers and Staff of 1974 and 1976

Originally I had intended to post this on Teachers' Day, which is usually celebrated on May 16th, but I reckoned it might be a good idea to put it up a little earlier, as some of you old foggies might need a few days to remember those individuals who painstakingly imparted their knowledge and wisdom to you back in the 70s.

Some teachers might be easier to remember, especially if they had, in their academic zeal, imparted some physical marks on your bodies to go with all that wisdom.  In a sense, one could say these teachers were extremely advanced in their thinking, and back then had already lived out that famous refrain that we associate with the current US President Obama: YES, WE CANE ...

I am including two photos of teachers and staff - which I found in a little publication called "A History of St Joseph's School Kuching, 1882-1994" written by Bro Hilary McGroary.

St Joe Going Private (Part 2)

.
Back in October, I posted what I had heard regarding the possibility of St Joe going private, but at that time the news was not yet official. You can go to that posting by clicking HERE .

Anyway, over the past two days, there have been a number of reports in The Star newspaper. I have been sent digital snapshots of some of them (thanks Leo & Bob!) .... Part of the text may not be very clear, so I hope to find a website link later.

Read it carefully and answer for yourselves the question: Is St Joseph's really going private?

Slightly zoomed in ...

And continued here on Page SA2 ...

Incidentally, Dominique Ng (Kim Ho) is a former Josephian  (Form 5Sc1, 1978.

.The CM expresses his view ...

and finally ...

I'm sure this posting will evoke some emotional comments from different parties. Over to you, parents and students, boys and girls ...

ELAS has located a most interesting set of photographs and sent it to us ... thanks Edmund !

For this posting, I'm going to leave the caption blank initially, and let you suggest what it should say, and then I'll fill it in. How's that for an interactive blog post creation?

Enjoy ...

The Football Chronicles of St Joe

.
.
This is starting to get very interesting. I was sitting quietly at a cafe in Ho Chi Minh City airport waiting for my flight to Singapore when I received this email from Edmund Lee, together with the following photo. I just had to post it up immediately. Apologies for any typos (which I will correct later) ...

Standing (L to R)
Cikgu Bujang Hadi (Coach/Manager), Joseph Jinggut (Captain - Midfield), Steven "Ferrari" Joseph (winger), Dublin "Iron-man" Unting (Full-back), John Dawi (reserve), Mathew Chin (with specs, partly hidden - reserve), Morshidi "Steady" Gani (full-back), Jonathan "Striker" Nanang (Centre-forward), Sudarsono "long-man" Osman (Centre-Back), Rev Bro Columba.

Front Row
Abdul Rahim (reserve), Abdillah "speedy" Adam ( Winger ), Dennis "Gordon Banks" Liew (Goalkeeper), Awang Abdullah (left back), Osman Abdul Rani (Mid-field), Soedirman Aini (forward)

Excerpt of Edmund's email follows ...

"... follow-up on the chance-meeting with Cikgu Bujang and posting on our School's Football Teams of the '70s, especially the Team of 1973 which spearheaded St. Joseph's School dominance in the Inter-School Football arena - Champions for 3 consecutive years, 1973, 74 and 75.

Cikgu met up with a few of us this morning over breakfast and what was initially thought of as a short & quick meeting carried through for another two hours.....with Cikgu sharing nostalgic memories of life in the heydays of St. Joseph's.

What was even more impressive was that Cikgu told us that he spent more time in school than at home - from his normal teaching routine to the much-looked-forward-to training on the football pitch. He mentioned that his greatest challenge was not the lack of players but the sadness in excluding some potenially good and committed students from the team because he could only register 16 players. Such was the pool of talent available and the enthusiasm of these students to don the school colours...that's St. Joseph's.

And Cikgu also shared a very touching, yet interesting part of his personal life....his marriage. His wedding party, to be more precise. We were astounded when he mentioned that his best man was a CHINESE ! Yes, a Chinese as a best man in a Malay wedding !! Would you believe that ? And that Chinese best man was non other than his buddy and colleague - Mr. Anthony Goh, our school's renowned athletics coach extra-ordinaire.That's REALLY 1Msia - a Christian Chinese as best man at a Muslim friend's wedding !

Unfortunately, Cikgu was unable to produce a photograph of that "historic" occasion, as the best man was too busy ushering the guests. (multi-tasking, I guess )

Kudos, Cikgu for your magnanimity and humility. No wonder you were ( and still are ) held in such high regard and respect among the students during your tenure in St. Joseph's.

Back to the Team photo - the famous sons of 1973 ...

For the record, the Team beat our arch-rivals St. Thomas' School 2-0 in the replayed final match. The first match ended in a stale-mate. ( 1-1 )

Let's hear it from some of our brother Josephians who were there when it happened....be it in school or during the tournament itself.

Do we still recall the Monday school assemblies when Bro Columba presented trophies or awards for achievements ? Were you one of the lucky few who were priviledged enough to walk up those steps to the stage to receive your awards?

The feeling must be "out of this world" as fellow school-mates gave you an ovation when your name was announced. That's the spirit inculcated in us and the environment that we went through - regular bonding and a great camaraderie among this band of brothers. We ate, we talked, we slept, we dressed "St. Joseph's" That distinguished us from other schools - we had "THE JOSEPHIAN SPIRIT"   "Ora Et Labora"

Cheers and have a Great and Blessed Weekend."

Thanks Edmund. This third report seals your reputation as the "Football Correspondent" for the Josephians of the Seventies blog. I have no doubt this is just the start of the "Football Chronicles"....

News : St Joseph's going PRIVATE ??

.

Have you heard that St Joseph's School is going PRIVATE ? What I learnt is that it will be privatised, with the Church having majority ownership, and run as a private institution from year 2012.

I certainly don't have all the full details, and some of you will know much more than me. Please do share.

Random Shots from St Joe (Part 1)

.
There was a recent request to post some photos of St Joe. I think there may be many Josephians who are now living away from Kuching, and perhaps have not 'balik kampong' for a while ... so these photos may be of interest to them too.

Here's the main building and statue of St Joseph ...
Fig 1

There's a saying that "The way to a man's heart is through the stomach" (ok, ok, no wisecracks now !!! :-) and so next we see the school canteen. I must say it hasn't changed that significantly since I was there.

Fig 2

Going up the stairs from the canteen, we see the rest of what we used to call the Science Block in the mid 70s, but now it's named the La Salle Block

Fig 3

Here's another view of the La Salle Block  ...

Fig 4

The block on the right did not exist in the mid 70s. Does anyone know when it was built? Anyway it's called the Josephian Block.

Fig 5

Next we see the Old Boys Block. I know this one well, having spent my 3rd, 4th and 5th Forms in the classrooms here.

Fig 6

Here's the familiar corridor in that same block ...

Fig 7

Here's the car park area behind the main block.

Fig 8

On the other side is of course the William Tan Auditorium ...

Here are some of the Form 5 (76) chaps visiting the auditorium ...

Here's the Datuk Polycarp Sim sports stadium ...

Fig 10

Let me stop here for now.  I reckon these photos should be enough to trigger some fond memories.

I'll continue the tour in Part 2 on another day.
