Many of our schoolmates were Boy Scouts back at St Joe. The Scout movement was started by Robert Baden-Powell in UK in 1907, and has spread to more than 200 countries around the world, with some 38 million members. Scouting in Malaysia started with the state of Sabah in 1913. Sarawak followed in 1915. "Be prepared", the motto of the international scout movement, has always been a good reminder for facing the vicissitudes of life.

See how many individuals you can name.

Sky Sim (Form 5 in 1976) just sent me another old photo. I'll leave it to Sky to tell you the year and occasion. He was the Group Leader then.
Here are a few more from Sky. Unfortunately some of these are not as clear as the first one. We're trying to get a better scan, but in the meantime you'll just have to squint a bit :-)
Don't get all knotted now ... share any photos and stories from your scouting days ...

ReplyDeleteThe fler standing most left middle row (without scout uniform) is real coool. I guess he wanted to be in the picture badly.
ReplyDeletecampfire, singing campfire songs, mixing with the girl guides during campfire are some of the memorable moments. oh yeah..another... learning to tie knots. and not forgetting achieving the variety of awards/badges. Those were the days. Cheers!

Thanks for the memories, Pierce and SKY.
ReplyDeleteSt. Joseph's School holds the distinction of producing the first Queen's Scout {the highest award in Scouting } in East Malaysia - in the person of Peter Lim Thian Seng who received it in 1957 when Sarawak was still under the British rule.
ReplyDeleteI had the honour of meeting up with him over breakfast (he stays in Green Road) and he was generous enough to share his scouting experience and the glorious day he received the award from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Sorry no pics of camp fires or girl guides. I will put in your call to my contacts with some former guides to see what they can dig up or prepared to share.
ReplyDeleteKeep sending in old photos of your scouting days, guys. I'll post them up so that your memories are preserved.
ReplyDeleteNext month, I'd like to do another posting about the Interact Club. If any of you were members and have old photos or stories, do send them to me.
Interact Club motto: Service Above Self
